4 or 5 months ago while poking around the monome.org message board that I frequent on, this Canadian group called Names posted this video of them doing a live performance using the monome in the studio. Most of what I’d heard with the monome up to that point was mostly instrumental, but they were throwing vocals in there and it sounded really nice. At any rate, shortly after that, they put out a 6 song EP, and after reading their blog for a while it became apparent that they were open to collaborating with different artists. I contacted them to see about doing a remix of the song “Show You Love” off of their EP. I had been working on a track that already sounded like it would work if I changed up the key and tempo a bit, but as it turned out, someone else had already asked them about doing a mix of that track. After listening through the EP again, I asked about doing a remix of Beating Records, which has this great broken beat track over rhodes and string parts.

Ajay graciously sent me the stems of the track. I knew I probably wasn’t going to use a ton of the material aside from the vocal track, but it was nice to get a peek inside the arrangement and actually soloing out some of the parts gave me some ideas for countermelodies. After playing around with it for a while, I kind of settled on doing something at half tempo of the original track. Their track was upbeat and driving, so I took it to a new place with half tempo and filling the spaces with glitchy marble samples, cello parts, bouncy arpeggiated FM synths, and a throbbing Dubstep bassline. It’s definitely a headphone song. I seem to do my best work at around 2am.

I hope that they release it in a format that’s purchasable, but in the meantime I can give you a listen only here.

Here’s the original track: Data Romance – Beating Records

Here’s my version of the track: Data Romance – Beating Records (Meta Remix)

I hesitated in posting this because technically this isn’t a client of mine. I’ll explain. There’s this site called Genius Rocket that puts designers together with clients. I think the idea is interesting, but where it kind of falls flat is, rather than letting the client decide on a designer via a bidding process, the designers are given a creative brief and complete the work in full, and the client picks out of the completed projects. To me, this results in a bunch of last minute entries, and not alot of quality overall. Then there are those of us that go out of our way to create a really quality product for basically nothing because our project didn’t get picked. I’ll just say that i’m glad I only spend $40 on the licensed images, and had a really awesome friend do the voiceover on spec. It represents alot of hours for a job that didn’t come through, so I find it unlikely that i’ll take that approach again. It does however, represent a valuable entry in my portfolio and as such, here it is. The Catalogue actually seems like a really great idea: You donate to this fund, and the good folks at the Catalogue do research and vet the different candidate organizations, and then give you a smarter choice of what causes you’d like to donate to. They also take your donations and multiply them, presumably through some investments.

A couple of weeks ago, my friend Steve and I headed up to PDX to go see Edison on his Death Stare Tour. I’d been following Edison on the monome discussion boards for some time, and I really enjoyed his video performances and his two albums. On a whim, I shot him a message on his MySpace asking if he’d mind if I shot some video of him and recorded his performance, and left him my number. A couple of hours later, he’d called me back and left me a voicemail giving me the OK. I wasn’t really sure how it was going to work; I didn’t know anything about the venue, or the sound system or anything. I just packed the camera, recorder, and a slew of cables and hoped for the best. The Ella Street Social Club was a DIVE. A charming dive, with a bathroom door that didn’t lock, and open stalls, one large(ish) room and a tiny little stage. The “sound system” was a crazy 80′s-era 4 channel mono amp head with crackly pots, missing input jacks, and two completely random speakers on each side of the stage. DIVE. Haha.

We made due though, and after introducing myself the Edison and Owner/Operator, I was able to tie directly into their sets. I wished they had started an hour earlier so I could have gotten to see Egadz set. Anyway, here’s the resulting video(s)

Bo Lane of Rethink Monthly Magazine contacted me about putting together a video to promote a local charity movement called I Give A Shirt, Started by Whitney Ferrin. There are many homeless youth in our locality and Whitney found that oftentimes they wouldn’t attend school simply because they don’t have clean clothing or the ability to address the most fundamental hygienic needs. A truly sad reason to miss out on an education. I Give A Shirt is aimed at addressing this issue by raising funds through the sales of I Give A Shirt apparel; for every shirt sold, $10 goes towards clothing and hygiene products that get distributed to local youth. This most worthy cause is lead by local students, and is aimed at local students. It’s awesome to see our youth rise up to address public issues.

The video was shot with minimal lighting for a slightly grungy look, and jump cut-edited in post for impact. This was an opportunity for me to completely light, direct, shoot, edit, and post produce an entire project, including writing music for the piece. This was also the first time I was able to present my logotype and ideogram at the end of a piece.

A local design outfit Vintom had been tapped to develop a website for a new local business, Paramount Real Estate Services, run by Brian and Nina White. Vin contacted me mid-project about putting together a short video for them to help promote their website. We went back and forth on different ideas and settled on a direct frontal approach, rehearsed, but no teleprompter. Having to focus on the camera the whole time was a bit unnerving for them but in the end, the direct eye contact and natural delivery paid off. The piece feels like they’re talking right to you, and adds transparency to their business. I shot and edited this piece, and hired Rick Lord at Rick Lord Photography to handle the scene and subject lighting.
