4 or 5 months ago while poking around the monome.org message board that I frequent on, this Canadian group called Names posted this video of them doing a live performance using the monome in the studio. Most of what I’d heard with the monome up to that point was mostly instrumental, but they were throwing vocals in there and it sounded really nice. At any rate, shortly after that, they put out a 6 song EP, and after reading their blog for a while it became apparent that they were open to collaborating with different artists. I contacted them to see about doing a remix of the song “Show You Love” off of their EP. I had been working on a track that already sounded like it would work if I changed up the key and tempo a bit, but as it turned out, someone else had already asked them about doing a mix of that track. After listening through the EP again, I asked about doing a remix of Beating Records, which has this great broken beat track over rhodes and string parts.

Ajay graciously sent me the stems of the track. I knew I probably wasn’t going to use a ton of the material aside from the vocal track, but it was nice to get a peek inside the arrangement and actually soloing out some of the parts gave me some ideas for countermelodies. After playing around with it for a while, I kind of settled on doing something at half tempo of the original track. Their track was upbeat and driving, so I took it to a new place with half tempo and filling the spaces with glitchy marble samples, cello parts, bouncy arpeggiated FM synths, and a throbbing Dubstep bassline. It’s definitely a headphone song. I seem to do my best work at around 2am.

I hope that they release it in a format that’s purchasable, but in the meantime I can give you a listen only here.

Here’s the original track: Data Romance – Beating Records

Here’s my version of the track: Data Romance – Beating Records (Meta Remix)

Anymore now with an extremely active family life (read: 6 year old daughter), it’s difficult to pull together time to think through large arrangements. I’ve found it easier to give myself some boundaries and try to help focus what time I do have towards music. After experimenting a bit, I’ve kind of settled on a 5 track method of coming up with musical sketches. By sticking to this “Fundamental 5″ structure of a melody, counter melody, pad or string layer, bass and drums, I can build sketches relatively quickly.

The second piece of it is turning the sketch into something performable. I used to like to just sit back and watch all of my automation and parts fly by on the sequencer, but these days it’s so much more fun to get in it and work with it on the fly. After much, much buying and selling and playing around with different control surfaces, I’ve settled on primarily a 128 grid system that I’ve customized to control both the arrangement and live effects, with the addition of small, flexible controllers that focus on mixing, percussion, and note entry. Using a customized Ableton Live template, I have a setup that gives me a static set of intuitive controls while allowing me to fly compositions and parts in and out at will, and for the most part, disconnect from the computer screen and just focus on manipulating the music through the control surfaces.

This is a sketch that I came up with in the winter of ’09 while at a beach house with the family. I have played through this song a bunch of times with a sort of loose idea of dynamic direction and arrangement that allows me to experiment and self-correct as I play the song, but for the most part, this is a one take.

A couple of weeks ago, my friend Steve and I headed up to PDX to go see Edison on his Death Stare Tour. I’d been following Edison on the monome discussion boards for some time, and I really enjoyed his video performances and his two albums. On a whim, I shot him a message on his MySpace asking if he’d mind if I shot some video of him and recorded his performance, and left him my number. A couple of hours later, he’d called me back and left me a voicemail giving me the OK. I wasn’t really sure how it was going to work; I didn’t know anything about the venue, or the sound system or anything. I just packed the camera, recorder, and a slew of cables and hoped for the best. The Ella Street Social Club was a DIVE. A charming dive, with a bathroom door that didn’t lock, and open stalls, one large(ish) room and a tiny little stage. The “sound system” was a crazy 80′s-era 4 channel mono amp head with crackly pots, missing input jacks, and two completely random speakers on each side of the stage. DIVE. Haha.

We made due though, and after introducing myself the Edison and Owner/Operator, I was able to tie directly into their sets. I wished they had started an hour earlier so I could have gotten to see Egadz set. Anyway, here’s the resulting video(s)

I’ve been doing alot of freelance work lately, and something that I’ve been battling for a long time is the idea of the monetization of art. In the early years, it used to drive me crazy actually, but I seemed to have found a sense of balance. That’s not to say, of course, that there aren’t some definite caveats. These days, long hours into the night are spent doing freelance projects instead of songwriting and making beats like I used to. I’m finding now though, that it’s worth the loss of some income to make some time for myself to be creative for the sake of creativity; art for the sake of art. Instead of monetary compensation, I get the satisfaction of producing a piece of art that’s as good or bad as I want it to be. This is one of a line of projects that I’ve assigned myself to do to stay creative and inspired.

I hadn’t known the Bachrans super well while attending church with them, but I’d served alongside them a number of times, and ran into Daniel more than once at the Mac Store. When I found out that Kelly was an American Idol hopeful that went on to Hollywood week, I jumped at the chance to shoot a quick video with them. I had seen that they were recording some cover songs in their house, so I offered to come and shoot something with my own gear in their home setting. This was the result. While I need to work on a better way to stabilize my camera during shooting, I was pretty happy with the way it turned out, and my reward ultimately, was the experience of shooting and producing it. I need to remind myself of that more.

Last year I went through a phase of interest in the grassroots movement of DIY control interfaces for software. One in particular caught my eye: the monome. The monome is basically a grid button interface that you can use to control things. People mostly use it for music, but i’ve seen it used for video, lighting, games, etc. All sorts of stuff. The beauty is that it’s infinitely flexible, only limited by your imagination and programming skill. Sadly, this is the same thing that killed it for me. The program used to control it primarily, is Max/MSP, though it does support other apps using OSC, it’s primary method of communication. Max is difficult, and expensive. You could run all sorts of patches built by the monome-ing community, but in the end, the things that you missed were things like a good save/recall system for presets, and all the hoops you jump through to get it up and running. I found myself messing with getting patches to work, rather than any actual music being made. That being said, it’s a great performance tool. I had the original 40h, then a 64, then a 128. In the end, I sold it because it just took too much time to do something useful, so it ended up being a really cool decoration in my office. My philosophy about gear is always that if it’s not getting used, it needs to go to someone that will, so I sold it to a nice fellow in California.

Now since then, Ableton has teamed up with Cycling ’74, makers of Max, and developed a Max4Live, that allows you to run Max patches right inside Live. This has been the tie in that everyone has been waiting for, and now has once again piqued my interest. I think this time i’d like to build one though. Here’s one of the original videos that sold me on it:
