A Relaxing Weekend. Well, mostly.
by chris ~ March 26th, 2006. Filed under: Computers, Family. We’re here in Reedsport, on the coast enjoying the company of some of my parents ( I have many parents, long story). It’s been alot of fun to just relax and talk, and visit. Today, we went into Coos Bay, and went to Cranberry Sweets, which I remembered had a storefront in Empire. The funny thing is, Rachael Ray came through here some time ago filming one of her $40 A Day episodes, and stopped by the store. They had a video of it playing in the back. Anyway, they specialize in gellied candies, cranberries being thier specialty. We got an assortment of gellies and some that taste exactly like Lemon Meringue Pie.
I brought the travel laptop, thinking i’d be able to play a bit in the later evenings, and discovered that my primary partition on my 300GB firewire drive was hosed. I spent various pieces of time today seeing what i could to do recover it, but it’s slow going. it’s crunching a recovery routine now for it’s 12th hour now. i know i can get the data off with a utility, but i’m trying to rebuild the partition so i don’t have to. regardless, I know what i’m doing this coming week: i’m going to be backing up all 300GB to DVD backups. Some of this stuff can be reloaded, but I have this Samples folder that has all of my loops and sampler stuff for making music, and some of it I’ve been collecting since ‘98 and I just don’t want to take a chance on losing it permanently.
Maren handled the ride here pretty good; it was a good 3 hour trip. She’s warmed up to Vickie and Chuck quite well. We had strawberries and ice cream the other night, and she tried to pronounce strawberry, but it came out “Sha-Ba-Tee?”. So cute!
She’s in the other room tonight, with the fan, so we were out of a fan for our room. Carey has to sleep with a fan for the noise because I may, or may not have a snoring issue. (my sources confirm that the accusation might be mutual.
) anyway, in true geek fashion, I quickly built a 6 channel multitrack session on my parents computer, using 10 second bursts of brown noise panned in different directions and dumped it down to 2 track and i’ve put it on an infinite loop. Sounds just like the box fan at home, minus the annoying rattle. I should just do this at home, it would probably save us some money on the power bill.
